We were recently faced with a difficult dilemma: head to A.C. to see Franz Haray’s magic show or stay in Illadelphia for yet another drink special/press gathering. After a quick peak at Weather.com, we thought it would be best to enjoy the 89-degree, no-cloud weather on Thursday and Friday with a cocktail at the Bikini Beach Bar. You know you’d do the same.
Thurs., June 21
3:10pm
We arrive at Resorts just in time for check-in. The clang of coins is a welcome sound, but our eyes are fixed on the seagull-swarmed beaches steps away. It is the first day of summer . . .
3:25pm
Our room is ridiculous. The sheer size of the bathroom rivals our bedrooms in the city. There are two sinks, a vanity (which we immediately stocked full of our supplies), a separate restroom area and a glass-door and stone shower. However, we waste no time slipping into our new bikinis (has anyone seen the bikini sale at Victoria's Secret?).
4:15pm
We have less than two hours to be dressed and at Wellington’s for dinner. However, our eyes were fixed on funnel cakes, palm readings and Skee ball. (Click here for our Beachgoers Guide.) Even though filets, jumbo shrimp and desserts loomed in our imminent future, Caitlin decided she wanted sweet potato fries. We made a quick stop at Plate in Trump’s Spice Road. Mental note: whenever back in A.C., come to Plate for a perfectly fried and generously portioned snack.
6:23pm
We arrive at Wellington’s a bit late (to be honest, we weren’t sure where it was). We’d never heard anything about this Tropicana steakhouse, and a quick Google search for reviews was to no avail. We were pleasantly surprised: the view was amazing (you sit right on top the beach and have a close-up view of waves breaking on the shore) and I’m pretty sure the cheesecake was the best we’ve ever had. As for the filet, well, we have pretty high standards having tasted Barclay’s and Ruth’s Chris’s cuts.
8:43pm
Haray cuts a girl into six separate pieces. Caitlin almost throws up aforementioned fries.
9:23pm
Kristin congratulates Caitlin on staying away from the tables this trip and suggests drinks at Red Square.
9:34pm
Kristin realizes she doesn’t have her ID on her. Caitlin wants to play “just one round” to ease the pain.
10:25pm
With ID in hand we head to Red Square. Kristin orders a pear martini that tastes more like cherry cough syrup and quickly sends it back for the tried-and-true cosmo. Caitlin’s Red Bellini, however, is the perfect blend of champagne and sweet raspberries. As we sip our drinks we realize that the lights have dimmed, the music has gotten a few decibels louder and people are starting to trickle in. Our waitress is exceedingly friendly in her mini skirt and Russian snow boots, and we soon learn she’s a local teacher with aspirations to adopt and apparently “do anything” for Caitlin’s Colin Stuart wedges. We enjoy the sophisticated atmosphere for awhile (complete with real ice columns and Soviet-era wall murals) and pay our $25-for-two-drinks bill.
11:52pm
Fast forward to the Borgata’s game floor. We make a beeline for Gypsy Bar; you can hear the energy all the way by the roulette tables. The place was packed and a live band was rocking out on stage (with a pretty great rendition of Seal’s “Kiss from a Rose”). We order two large glasses of Amstel and grab a clutch spot on two leather chairs near the dance floor.
12:03pm
All eyes in the place are fixated on an older couple dry humping, doing backbends and almost falling in the center of the room. Everyone is laughing but they think we’re loving their Moonwalk. Kristin finishes her glass in under a half an hour, as accepted by general society. Caitlin sips just above the halfway mark before we leave an hour later.
Friday, June 22
10am
Conference call that lasts about 45 minutes. We think nothing of it until we check out later that day to discover a $66 fee. Mental note: do not use hotel phones.
11:45am
We’re on the beach, preparing our prime piece of sand real estate for a day of sun. We can hear the music from the Bikini Beach Bar behind us and decide to take a quick lunch break. Bikini wings ($11) from the Pickles Grill, Old Bay fries ($5) and a basket of chicken fingers does us in for the rest of the day.
2pm
We were looking forward to pedicures at Larimar at the Pier at Caesars (on Fridays you get margaritas with your service), but discovered they were booked up until 4pm. Back to the beach to finalize the last layer of skin cancer and plan our next trip down.
